Packing lunches is just one of those mom things that I do and I may not always love doing it at 6 am BUT I feel like those lunches are full of love and I have peace of mind that they are at least putting something good in their bodies. Let's face it our kids are busy and they need to fuel their bodies and it's not with chips and cookies and yes, we can't control what they eat out of their lunches but my kids are pretty hungry come lunchtime and I know they are eating most if not all of what I pack!!
So let's talk lunchbox ideas! My kids often stay at school for after school sports or a late class so I've got to include enough to get them through the day so they don't hit the vending machine. I don't know about you BUT I am always looking for new fun, and healthy ideas of lunchbox ideas. I thought I would share some of my favorites.
Sandwich options: I love the 100 calorie sandwich rounds and the best part about sandwiches is that I can add arugula or spinach, tomato, avocado even cucumbers into the sandwich and they all eat it!! I always try and grill or roast extra chicken breasts on Sunday and use that instead of deli meat and when I do use sliced turkey or ham I go for the no nitrates. Plus I stopped using mayo and I use hummus instead as a spread.
I often do salads as well for my husband and/or daughter, she's not a big sandwich fan.
I always include fruit and everyone has their favorites. Apples and grapes are the easiest!
Other goodies I include are trail mix and I mix my own and store in these cute little containers. I make a bunch and then just grab and toss into their lunches. The fun thing is you could mix it up every week and add different things - dried cranberries, mini chocolate chips, peanuts, raisins, etc.
I love the pre-packaged hummus and pita or pretzel packages. They are so easy to grab and toss in lunches plus they are better than chips! The individual peanut butters are also a great option especially if it's a long day. Peanut butter is a great afternoon snack option and I cut up apples or celery to go with it!
And everyone needs a sweet, right? One of my kids favorites are the Trader Joe's Cinnamon Alphabet cookies . . . and remember my kids are older . . . they have loved these since they were little. Which is fine with me because they are a little better then say an oreo (or so I tell myself). :) The key is a use the snack size ziplock bags so the portions aren't out of whack!
Kids will be kids and I know they are probably buying or trading for things at school. My youngest loves to ride his bike to the 99 cents store after school and see what "great" deals he can score for 99 cents. BUT at least I know that they have something good in their bodies and it's not just junk food!
I would love to hear your lunchbox ideas . . . like I said I am always looking for new ideas. Comment below!
